Impulse is the product of net force and interaction time. Its equivilent to the change in momentum that an object experiences.

This formula originates from two, more basic formulas. P=Ft & P=mv. When you combine these two formulas you get Ft=mv. The inverse relationship between time and force in this equation is the cause for lots of modern technology.
Airbags are a perfect example of this. When a vehicle crashes an airbag expands and hits you. After the airbag expands it slowly compresses. By increasing the time of interaction, the force is decreased.
Sports padding is another example. The padding that football players use contains certain foams. When these foams are compressed they seem to "absorb" the collision. This is a common misconception. The padding increases the time of interaction so that the force is lessened.
